Colachal Victory Warrior , a 35 feet sculpture in honor of the brave soldiers who fought the Battle of Colachal, 1741

Colachal war

In the 17th and 18th century, The Dutch East India company was conducting exploitative and monopolized trade with south India.

King Marthanda Varma, the ruler of the Kingdom of Travancore and his associates refused the trade.

The Dutch decided to siege Kolachal, a strategic port town near Trivandrum, and defeat Padmanabhapuram the capital.

King Marthanda Varma, used local Kalari (martial warriors) and Mukkuvar ( divers)

to conduct marine warfare . The brave indian forces destroyed and sunk many superior Dutch Gun ships and decicively defeated the Dutch forces. Their Admirals surrendered.

After the victory of Kulachal war, a local fishing village was named Marthandam Thura.

Thus ending the nefarious Dutch ambition of colonizing India. The year was 1741.

The Colachal Victory Warrior, a 35 feet grand sculpture in honor of our BRAVE Kalari Mukkuvar warriors, was inaugurated on 23 Jul 2023, by the Honorable Governor of Kerala, in the presence of senior Army officers and dignitaries, at Pangode Military Station, Trivandrum.
